The Sunday Slump
You've noticed a pattern: your STK Push payment success rate is significantly lower on Sundays. Customers report prompts not arriving, transactions timing out, or "insufficient balance" errors when you know they have money. Is it your site? Is it the customer's phone? The answer is often external: the Safaricom network's weekend load and banking hour limitations.
Why Sundays Are Different
1. Peak Network Congestion
Sundays see a surge in mobile money activity as people send money to family, pay for church offerings, and settle weekend debts. This increased load on Safaricom's STK gateway can cause delays and timeouts.
2. Scheduled Maintenance Windows
Safaricom often schedules system maintenance during low-traffic periods, which sometimes fall on Sunday early mornings. This can temporarily disrupt STK services.
3. Customer Balance and Fuliza Limit Exhaustion
By Sunday evening, many customers have depleted their M-Pesa balances and their Fuliza limits from weekend spending. STK pushes fail due to insufficient funds, which the API reports as a "failure."
How to Mitigate the Sunday Slump
1. Increase the STK Timeout Window
On Sundays, extend the STK timeout from the standard 60 seconds to 90 seconds if your API allows. This gives the network more time to deliver the prompt.
2. Offer Alternative Payment Methods on Weekends
During checkout on Sundays, more prominently display alternative options: "Pay via USSD" or "Pay via Till Number (manual)." This captures sales when STK is flaky.
3. Send a "Pre-Checkout Balance" Nudge
Before the STK push, display a friendly reminder: "Please ensure your M-Pesa balance is sufficient, or check your Fuliza limit." This reduces the number of failed attempts due to insufficient funds.
4. Schedule High-Volume Promotions for Off-Peak Days
If possible, avoid launching flash sales or big promotions on Sunday evenings when the network is congested. Run them on Tuesday or Wednesday when success rates are higher.
The Data-Driven Approach
Your dashboard should be logging STK success rates by day and hour. Review this data regularly to identify patterns. When you see a Sunday dip, proactively adjust your checkout strategy. A 10% increase in Sunday success rate can translate into significant revenue over a year.
Don't accept the Sunday slump as "just how it is." Engineer around it.
