The Lie You Tell Yourself
You look at your monthly dashboard. Revenue: KSh 500,000. Expenses: KSh 450,000. Profit: KSh 50,000. You smile. "Tuko kwa profit." (We're in profit.) But there's a massive, invisible expense missing from that P&L: your own salary.
You work 60 hours a week in this business. If you were to hire someone to do your job, you'd pay them at least KSh 60,000 a month. Because you don't draw a fixed salary, your "profit" is actually KSh 50,000 - KSh 60,000 = -KSh 10,000. Your business is running at a loss. You're just subsidising it with free labour.
This is the "I Thought Tuko Kwa Profit" illusion, and it's the most common financial self-deception among Kenyan SME owners. A Business Management Dashboard can correct this by forcing you to account for your own market-value labour.
How to Fix the Illusion
Step 1: Determine Your Market Salary
If you were hiring a manager to run your business, what would you pay them? Be honest. Let's say KSh 60,000.
Step 2: Add "Owner's Salary" as a Fixed Expense
In your dashboard's Chart of Accounts, add a new expense category: "Owner's Salary." Set up a recurring monthly expense of KSh 60,000. This is now a fixed cost, like rent.
Step 3: View the Adjusted P&L
Your dashboard now shows:
- Revenue: KSh 500,000
- Other Expenses: KSh 450,000
- Owner's Salary: KSh 60,000
- Net Profit (Loss): -KSh 10,000
The Brutal Clarity
Now you see the truth. Your business, as currently operated, cannot afford to pay you a market salary. You have three choices:
- Increase revenue (raise prices, add new products, market more aggressively).
- Reduce other expenses (cut costs, renegotiate rent, streamline operations).
- Accept the reality that your business is a lifestyle business that provides you with a below-market income, and plan accordingly.
But you can't make a good decision based on a lie. Add your salary to the P&L, see the real numbers, and manage the business to a genuine profit.
