The Empty Phrase
Go to any Kenyan SME's website, and you'll likely find the phrase "We are a family." It's meant to convey warmth, unity, and a positive work environment. But to a procurement officer or a potential client, it's an empty cliché. Every company says it. It tells you nothing about how this team actually operates, collaborates, or treats its clients.
Generic culture statements don't build trust—they blur you into the crowd. If you want to signal a strong, trustworthy culture, you need to show specific, observable practices and values.
What Actually Signals a Strong Culture Online
1. Specific Values With Examples
Instead of "We value integrity," say: "We publish our project timelines and deliver status updates every Friday—even when the news is bad. We believe transparency builds trust." This gives the reader a concrete picture of how the value is lived.
2. Photos of Real Collaboration
Show a candid photo of your team working together on a real project—huddled around a blueprint, reviewing a report, or sharing lunch. Avoid posed, smiling-at-the-camera stock photos. Authenticity is visible.
3. Employee Testimonials (Not Just Client Ones)
Include a short quote from a team member: "I've worked here for 5 years because I get to solve real problems for clients, and my voice is actually heard in decisions." This is far more credible than "We are a family."
4. Public Commitments
If you have a policy on work-life balance, community service, or continuous training, state it specifically: "Every team member gets 5 paid days per year for professional development." Or "We close the office every Friday at 3 PM for team training." These are verifiable cultural practices.
Why Specificity Builds Trust
Specificity signals that you have thought about your culture and are confident enough to share details. It shows that your team is cohesive and deliberate. A procurement officer reading a specific culture statement thinks: "These people seem organised and professional. They'll probably deliver."
Stop hiding behind "We are a family." Show your culture through specifics, and you'll build trust that generic phrases never will.
